Nia [Long] is my girl, so it was like working with your girlfriends. One thing I had heard about reality TV is that they buy you houses. They put my family in a home…so, yeah…don’t make me cry!
It was hard, not just on me, but on my whole family.
My life affects my mother’s life, my son’s life and, of course, it affects my husband’s life. When you say that you are going to share story, it’s kind of hard when your story involves your whole family.
Beyond being purveyors of “fly” (indeed, a make-up artist and hairstylist were both at arm’s length), the ladies are tight cast mates and seemed to build a strong bond, at times finishing the other’s sentences. You are in situations and you have to face that situation in the moment.I had the same kind of fun on but with this one, it was different because it was like a block party. For it to have been my first film, I was very lucky. It’s like you have a disease, unless you get pregnant by Will Smith. But this forced me to confront and be confronted and stay in the moment and deal. The whole shooting took place on the street basically. It would be so many rappers there, and just because they were all together they would just start rhyming! I expected them all to be like that…and they’re not. Reality TV kind of chose me, I didn’t choose reality TV. And I didn’t marry Will Smith, Jada did, and that’s my girl! I wanted to use reality TV as a platform to diversify my talents. Because I couldn’t find work, I started directing a lot more and I realized I’m good at it. I don’t have to explain myself and you don’t have to explain yourself. But this situation forced me to deal with problems within my family; to communicate with the ladies–things that I don’t do. My mother and my husband get along better now than they ever have in the last 10 years, thanks to reality TV. It made me grow as a woman because it forced me to tackle issues within my family, as well as within Hollywood. This time around, the Black actresses are still striving to reclaim their show biz supremacy, but season two promises to get much more personal.
